Save our Swimming Pool Campaign Continues
14 Apr 2010
In December 2009, Dublin City Council announced that due to cutbacks in the budget there was no more funding available for the swimming pools in Sean McDermott Street, Coolock and Crumlin.
Local groups and residents came together to fight this decision and keep this local amenity open. Under the Local Area Plan the swimming pool was supposed to be transformed into a state of the art leisure centre but the economic situation means that not only will this community not get its leisure centre but the council are trying to close down one of the few local services available in the area.
The Save our Swimming Pool Campaign has been working with local councillors and funding was secured to keep the pool open until August of this year, however the future beyond that is unclear. On Monday 12th April the group along with the Coolock and Crumlin communities protested at City Hall before the City Council meeting. The city councillors voted at that meeting to recognise stand-alone swimming pools which is a vital change in the policy of only supporting leisure centres. This decision is useful in the battle to keep Sean McDermott Street Swimming Pool open.
